6 Fun and Best Places to Visit in Fargo North Dakota

Fargo, North Dakota is more than putting someone’s leg in a wood chipper. The Coen brothers’ famous 1996 film has a lot to answer for, but there’s no doubting its impact on putting the titular town on the map. A wood chipper can also be shown at a visitor center here. Is this going to be one of the top things to do in Fargo, North Dakota? Sure thing!

Real-life Fargo is a trendy city noted for its food culture, nightlife, student population, and arts centers. And not inept criminal shenanigans. It has a busy downtown area with one-of-a-kind stores and eateries.

Fun and Best Places to Visit in Fargo North Dakota:

1. Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center

Not least because it’s the first thing you see while exiting the freeway. I went there last year and found it to be interesting, informative, and a touch strange. There is professional staff on hand to assist you to the most notable historical landmarks in North Dakota.

And they are on top of everything interesting to see and do in the area. Don’t miss the Walk of Fame, where renowned and random celebrity visitors have left their handprints. The major attraction, but, is, of course, the Fargo wood chipper prop.

2. Plains Art Museum

The Plains Art Museum is far from ordinary. Its purpose is to build strong communities by emphasizing the value of art. It is North Dakota’s largest and only recognized art museum. A visit to the Plains Art Museum, one of the top things to do in Fargo, is a must-do when visiting this region of the world. It exhibits stunning and thought-provoking traditional Native American art. Over 4,000 items are in the permanent collection, with rotating temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

3. Fargo Theatre

The historic Fargo Theatre has been delighting locals and visitors for 90 years. It was once an art house cinema and vaudeville theater when it was built in the roaring 20s. Today, it showcases the most recent blockbusters, as well as independent and foreign films.

It’s also a terrific venue to see old movies on the big screen, and it hosts the Fargo Film Festival each year. Apart from being a movie theater, the Fargo Theatre’s facade and lobby are tourist attractions in their own right. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places, and the refurbished art deco entrance will make you smile. The city’s most photographed locations are the classic exterior and marquee. 4. Downtown Shopping & Eating

Apart from historic buildings and sites, downtown Fargo features a plethora of shopping, cafes and restaurants, bars, and boutique stores. There are many unusual boutiques, independent cafés, and art dealers. There are antique stores, thrift and upcycle shops, and record dives to explore.

The hub is Broadway Square, which hosts an annual calendar of activities. For handcrafted pies, check out Blackbird Wood-Fired Pizza. The Toasted Frog serves casual fare. Mezzaluna (pictured) is Fargo’s best fine dining establishment. Ishtar Mediterranean serves Middle Eastern cuisine as well.

6. Drekker Brewing Company

Craft breweries and taprooms are well-known in the Midwest. Every state, city, and municipality seems to have its own preferred brew. It’s the Drekker Brewing Company in Fargo, North Dakota. Drekker, which opened in 2014, has ascended to become one of North Dakota’s greatest breweries.

The massive Viking-themed beer hall symbolizes the owner’s Scandinavian roots and is a wonderful setting for a pint or three. They provide free brewery tours given by someone who crafts the beers on-site. This, of course, is followed by a guided tasting session where you can sample the items. Because I live in Wisconsin, I may be biased in favour of the Dairy State. Vikings are invited.
